This one’s gonna be a bit different since it’s such a special case. The game in the spotlight is Earthbound, and I think you’ll be shocked to see just how many musical similarities (and straight out rips) can be spotted throughout the game. Luckily, Kotaku put all of these instances into one awesome video for us. Click the gang below to check out the video!
Pretty amazing, huh? I never actually played through Earthbound unfortunately. I know it’s a sin, but it’s on my to do list, especially after finding out about this stuff!
Time for a new one! I thought this one was kind of odd. I heard this song when I was at the gym of all places (really did not seem like a gym song), and couldn’t get it out of my head for a reason you’ll soon hear.
.
Needless to say, I looked like a nutjob humming Ryu’s theme from Street Fighter on the treadmill for the next half hour. But that’s okay, it was worth it. Once again, its pretty crazy how you just come across these things sometimes.
The song that I heard is called “It’s a Sin” by the Pet Shop Boys, and I’ve never heard of the song or the group before that day. I just figured that was the name of the song since they said it so much, and lucked out to find I was right when I googled it at home :)
This next one comes from my second favorite game of all time (yes, I have a list), Kirby Superstar for the SNES. I caught this one a few years back. As you may have already guessed, I’ve got a thing for SNES games. But don’t worry, I promise to be diverse :)
.
So first, here’s the track from Kirby Superstar. This plays after beating the Revenge of MetaKnight game. It’s also when they show the cast of enemies, which is something I always love to see in any game.
After that is a song from the 60’s called “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals. I actually knew this song very well, but only because a bad midi of it was included on the jukebox mode of my old Casio keyboard when I was a kid. That, and “I Shot the Sheriff”. Good times :)
Let’s start out with the one that I most recently discovered after watching Pulp Fiction, but then was quick to find out was common knowledge! Maybe you’re in the same boat as me. Either way, it was fun to hear the connection.
.
First, here’s the song from Booster’s Tower in one of my favorite games ever, Super Mario RPG for the SNES. I also got some of the best laughs out of this game, like from this amazing storytelling in the Mushroom Kingdom.
After that is the track I heard while watching Pulp Fiction. The song is called “Comanche” by The Revels. It’s so cool when you catch these things out of the blue. I was freaking out when I heard it!
As I mentioned before, others have made this connection as well. There’s even a remix of the same track on Overclocked Remix that gives a nod to Pulp Fiction’s legendary director in its song title.
Hey there! Thanks for checking me out! ;)
Here’s the story. I find it very interesting when people find similarities (or straight out rips) between game music tracks and other music. Check out any of the incoming examples to see what I mean. I’d like this site to act as a compendium of all these findings, as well as a place for you and I to document our own discoveries. I’m not interested in making definitive claims or trying to prove anything really. I’m in it for the pure fun of finding these little nuggets of awesomeness. I’d like you to be the judge! :)
